Key takeaway

Scale weight includes far more than fat, so use trends plus performance and measurements to interpret progress.

What the scale contains

Body weight includes fat, muscle, organs, bone, glycogen, water and the contents of the digestive tract. A fast change over a few days is usually dominated by water and food mass, not tissue.

Preserving lean tissue

A moderate deficit, resistance training, adequate protein and sufficient recovery improve the likelihood of retaining lean mass during weight loss. No method can guarantee that every kilogram lost is fat.

Use multiple measures

Consider a rolling weight average, waist measurement, consistent photos, training performance, energy and clothing fit. Body-fat devices and visual estimates carry meaningful error.
