Key takeaway

Macros supply energy or building material, but their food sources also bring fibre, vitamins, minerals and enjoyment.

The three main macronutrients

Protein, carbohydrate and fat are nutrients the body uses in relatively large amounts. Protein and carbohydrate provide about 4 kcal per gram, while fat provides about 9 kcal per gram. Alcohol also provides energy, but is not an essential nutrient.

Macro targets are a way to organize an eating pattern—not a complete score of food quality.

  • Protein supplies amino acids used to build and repair tissues.
  • Carbohydrate is a versatile fuel, especially for moderate- and high-intensity exercise.
  • Fat provides energy, essential fatty acids and helps absorb fat-soluble vitamins.

Ranges, not perfect numbers

A useful target leaves room for day-to-day variation. Hitting 147 grams instead of 150 grams of protein has no meaningful consequence by itself.

Needs change with body size, training, total calories, goals and food preferences. A calculator can provide a starting range, then real-world trends refine it.

Look beyond the totals

Two diets can have identical macros and very different fibre, micronutrient and food-variety profiles. Build most meals from a protein-rich food, a carbohydrate source, produce and an appropriate source of fat.
